The Medical Day Care/Clinical Decision Unit is a multipurpose ambulatory unit designed to support medical day care procedures and outpatient activity. The CDU is an extension of the Emergency Department for 24-hour observation patients. The CDU provides care to patients who need more testing and observation in order to determine treatment setting, and are expected to be discharged or admitted within 24 hours.
The CDU also cares for Surgical patients that are unable to be discharged, but are expected to be discharged within 24 hours. These surgical CDU patients remain in the care of the surgeon. The unit is designed to hold 9 beds, (8 beds for CDU and 1 bed for MDC) and has 2 minor procedure rooms and a chair bay that holds 8 patients.
The nurse’s station is central to all patient bed and chair bays. The nurse’s station also features a Pyxis, patient tracking system, and a central telemetry monitor station. Each patient bay is equipped with sufficient oxygen and suction outlets and a Dash monitor system. There is a call light system in each area to provide communication of patient needs. There is also a dictation room/office, nourishment room, family waiting area and a television in each bay, excluding procedure rooms. Other available equipment includes infusion pumps to control IV fluids, portable blood pressure equipment, thermometers, and portable oxygen tanks.
Department Goals and Objectives
The goal of MDC/CDU is to assist LHS in the attainment of the vision and mission by providing the best outpatient care to our community. MDC/CDU works collaboratively with all support services, both internally and externally, to afford the best possible outcomes for its patient’s. To provide outpatient treatment for patients requiring procedures, outpatient medications, or minor surgical procedures that do not require moderate sedation; to help increase inpatient bed capacity particularly during periods of high census; and to increase the capacity of the emergency department so the number of patients who present to the emergency department can be seen within a reasonable period of time. Care is provided by standards of practical guidelines recognized by national, state, and/or discipline specific agencies or bodies of knowledge, such as AMA, ANA, DPH, JC, and CDC. Ongoing review of such standards and practices by physicians and nurses on staff assures current and safe practice to MDC/CDU.
